There is a tin, and it is optional

Ember Tiles is made by one person. It is given away because that seemed like the right way to give it away — not as a trial, not as a lead, and not as the free half of something.

What it costs to exist

Very little, which is the honest answer. There is no server, because the app has no backend at all — every tile, log and journal entry lives on your phone and is never sent anywhere. What remains is a domain, the yearly fee Apple charges to put an app on iPhones, and Google's one-time developer fee. Those get paid whether anyone reads this page or not.

So this is not a rescue fund and there is no target. It is a tin by the door.

If you want to

If you would rather not, that is genuinely fine, and it is the expected answer. Telling somebody about the app, or writing a review that says what it actually does, is worth more to a thing like this than money is.

What this does not buy

Worth saying plainly, because plenty of apps blur it:

• Not a subscription. Nothing renews. There is nothing to cancel.
• Not a feature key. The app cannot tell whether you have been here.
• Not a support contract. Bugs get looked at because they are bugs.

If the app ever does grow something paid, it will be a new thing built after this sentence was written — never a wall put up around something that used to be free. That is a promise about conduct rather than a promise about prices, because it is the one worth keeping.

Other ways

Reporting something that broke is the most useful thing anyone does. The app keeps a plain-text error log you can read yourself before sending — Settings → Extras & data → Diagnostics — and it never leaves your phone unless you choose to send it, to privacy@embertiles.ca.
